Linesperson: Rigging overhead lines Activity card
Students set up a simple model of an overhead cable running between two poles or pylons. They then adjust the tension in the cable and see what effect this has on the height of the cable above the ground/bench. The experiment is repeated with a desk fan blowing to simulate windy conditions.
After completing this activity students will:
- Understand the concept of tension.
- Understand how too great a tension in an overhead line could cause it to break in high winds.
