Turbine Technician: Build your turbine rotors Activity card
This activity is particularly suitable for younger and less able students.
Students set up a very simple 'wind turbine rotor test rig' by using a small DC motor and a rubber bung. Different numbers, arrangements and designs of rotors can then be tested with a desk fan and a voltmeter.
Once the class have all designed and built working rotors the activity could be extended by linking all of the turbines together and measuring the achieved voltage.
After completing this activity students will:
- Understand the importance of rotor design to the power output of a wind turbine.
- Understand how a generator transforms rotational kinetic energy into electrical energy.
