Electricity usage: How much energy does your classroom use? Activity card
Students carry out an energy audit of their classroom by investigating the power of different electrical appliances. Students use this information to produce graphs which show how the power used by the different appliances might vary over the course of 24 hours. They then 'add' these graphs together to get an idea of how the power consumption of the classroom as a whole might vary. If time allows, each pupil could draw a graph for each appliance, but if time is more restricted students could each choose two appliances or else work in small groups and the graphs could be brought together on the class whiteboard.
After completing this activity students will:
- Understand how power consumption varies with different conditions.
- Understand how power consumption may follow regular patters dictated by day and night or the seasons for instance.
- Understand why the National Grid has to anticipate these variations to meet demand.
