Overhead lines Activity card
Students use craft straws to create their own model electricity pylon. This activity is very accessible to lower ability and younger children and will help them to understand how structures use forces to cope with anticipated and unanticipated loads. The activity can be altered slightly by giving students tokens, rather than straws and other building materials. The tokens can then be used as 'money' so that students can purchase the equipment they require.
After completing this activity students will:
- Understand how structures are designed to support loads.
- Understand the kind of loads that may be imposed on an electricity pylon.
- Understand why electricity pylons come in different sizes and designs.
