Gas Service Engineer Engineering task
In the role of Gas Service Engineer, students ask a series of questions to diagnose a fault in a gas central heating boiler.
After completing this activity students will:
- Know the main parts of a gas central heating boiler.
- Understand that gas appliances must be adequately ventilated to prevent the production of toxic carbon monoxide gas.

Note: Students can get help by clicking on
or going to the Help manual.
The gas is burning without enough oxygen to allow complete combustion.
The problem could be with either the burner or the automatic air vent.
The most helpful question to ask about the automatic air vent is whether the outer flue is supplying enough air to the burner. The answer confirms that it is working fine.
The most helpful question to ask about the burner is what is the correct rate of flow of gas through the burner, and what is the current rate. The answer confirms that there is a problem.
