Jointer Engineering task

Students produce a safe operating procedure for joining high voltage underground cables. This involves them selecting appropriate equipment, and safety procedures for each task.

After completing this activity students will:

  • Understand the risks associated with high voltage cables.
  • Understand how using an operating procedure contributes to safe working.
  • Understand the steps in the process of laying an underground cable.

1). Survey the site
Equipment – Hazard warning signs
Safety – Check for hazards and put up warning signs

2). Locate the cables
Equipment – Cable Avoidance Tool, Marker spray, Metal detector, Site plan
Safety – Locate any other pipes or cables buried in the area that you need to be aware of

3). Excavate the cables
Equipment – Mechanical excavator, Shovels and spaces
Safety – Keep everyone clear of working machinery

4). Join the cables
Equipment – Ferrules, Joint enclosure kit, Safety clothing, Toolkit
Safety – Check and put on safety clothes, Check that the line is dead and has been electrically isolated (unless approval has been given for live work)

5). Backfill
Equipment – Mechanical excavator, Sand, Shovels and Spades
Safety – Keep everyone clear of working machinery

6). Depart
Equipment – Van large enough to carry equipment
Safety – Make sure all equipment and waste is removed from the site and stowed securely in the van
