Overhead lines Big Picture Challenge
Students are in charge of a project to link up a wind farm with a step-up substation. They need to buy the right equipment and make sure the right people are there so that the project can be completed on budget and on time.
After completing this activity students will:
- Understand the different circumstances under which underground cables and overhead lines are used.
- Understand the role of transformers in distribution and transmission networks.
- Understand the need for integrating teams of people with different skill sets on large engineering projects.

Cables:
Choose 1000 m of 750 V underground cable and 1000 m of 750 V overhead line.
Pylons:
Choose enough wooden 10 m pylons, with a maximum rating of 750 V to cover 1 km of ground.
Transformer:
Choose the 750 V to 33,000 V step-up transformer.
Teams:
To do the job within ten days, you’ll need 1 Fitter, 3 Jointers and 3 Linespeople.
